Title: Electric Motor Care on Race Day

Stone Cold Spider 3:16 - May 9, 2006 02:06 PM (GMT)
most race days include
3x 5minute heats
and
3x 5minute finals
races

thats 30minutes of racing
not including warmup laps and cooldown laps
thats alot of work for the high performance motors of today and to keep them in top condition and get consistant performance u need to do some minor mantance between races...

cleaning the comm...
it does not take long for the comm and brushes to get very dirty... after every run i like to clean the comm and the brushes.... many motor companites such and Team Orion and Trinity have comm cleaning stick/pends that u use by taking out the brushes form the hoods and putting the stock/pen tip in there and rotating the armiture manuely to clean it... and thats basicly what i do between races, u would also use thoes cotton buds u use to clean ur ears and spray some motor spray on the ends and putting that into the brush head and rotate the armiture but becare that strands of cotton dont get wound arround the comm...

cleaning the brushes...
u tend to use the cotton buds that u use to clean ur ears and spray some motor spray on the end of the cotton bud and clean the ends on the brush with that... it wont take long to see just how dirty the brush gets after a 5minute race...

Oiling the bushings...
if u run Stock or 19turn Spec motors u will have Brass bushing at both ends of the motor that hold the armiture place.. these bushing arnt very good at holding/absorbing oil.. so u will need to oil them after every 5minute run ans the roation of the armiture in the bushing tends to spray alot fo the oil off the bushing... again most motor companies sell high quality bushing oil.. the best way to clean the bushing is with a tooth brush as the brishes will b ablke to get into the nook and crannies of the bush housing then put fresh oil on them and rotate the armiture manualy a few revolutions to spread the oil around the bushing

Oiling ball bearings
if u run a mod motor or outlaw 19t/stock u might have ball bearings
these dont require as much maintance...
i tend to lightly oil the ball bearings after every races

thats about it.... non of thoes tip will take more thna a few minutes and its time well spent to get consistant performance out of the motor throughout a race day...

of course after every race day u should do a complete rebuild that include cutting the comm and replacing the brushes...
