Title: Rubber Tire Care

Stone Cold Spider 3:16 - May 9, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Every good racer knows that tires make up 90% of the cars setup
no amount of car tuning can overcome wrong tire selection...

so uve selected the right tires now its time to take care of them....

first of all u need to glue the rubber tires to the rims
http://www.bestrctrucks.com/Articles/tire-gluing.shtml
this link talks about RC truck tire gluing but the same principals apply to touring car tires and rims as well

after every run give the tires a quick clean with a rag
if the surface is rather grimey like a tarmac track thats has alot of nitro cars going over it then u should use some water or other rubber friendly cleaning agent such as window cleaner to get the grim off the tire... before running again.. do not use WD40 as this will eat away at the rubber over a short period of time.... some ppl ive seen even use motor spray but i cant afford to use the motor spray on the tires after every run... i tend to use windex of other window cleaner as its like 97% water and the active cleaning agents dont eat away at the rubber and its alot ceaper......

if u use traction compound the same principal applies... clean the tire with a rag and some cleaning agent or water after every run before adding the traction compound again.....

on most race days ppl will use tire warmers to get the tire nice and warm before the race this can b very handy if u haev a short turnaround time between the last race on the track and ur own race that limits or even cancils any warmup laps u can do.... if u use tire wamrers i strongly reccomend not putting them on any earlier than 5minutes before your race and use water or other cleaning agents after every run to keep the moister in the toiles so the tire warmers dont dry out the tires.

after the race meeting take the tire off and store them away in the best dust free place and try to keep the tires out of direct sunlight for long periods of time as that will dry out the ruvver and will cause crazy cracking on the rubber surface.....

if ur not going to b using the tires for long periods of time give them a wipe over with a damg rag every month or so to keep them moist and stop them from drying out and cracking

if u intend not to use the car for awhile eaither take off the wheels or place a block of wood under the chassis so the wheels are off the ground... if u leave a car with its wheels touching the ground for long periods of time u can "flat spot" the tire from the weight of car pressing on the bttom of the tire and that will cause a bad handeling car.

rubber tires plus rims can b costly invesments so u wanna get the most of them
remember
take care of ur tires and they will take care of ur very expencive car

Thx Matt for the following link to how to glue rubber tires to rims..
this is a better how to than the other one in my post...

another quick update post....
after every race meeting check the tires arround the rim...
9 times out of 10 if u have raced the same set of tires for an entier race meeting
some of the ruubber would have started to become unglued and pull away from the rim causing bad handeling and vibration problems on the car.
this just requres a drop of glue to reglue the rubber to the rim

I've found that happen with my front tyres quite a lot.

yeah theres alot of force exerted on the tires...
lets say a 1:10 scale car is doing 40mph in scaled terms its doing about 400mph
and lets say u take a corner at about 12mph in scaled terms thats about 120mph
thats alot of force pulling and pushing on thoes tires
thats y its sooo important to take care of them....

I have incorporated the tyre check into my post race checks.
