Title: HPI project
Description: think Im outta my depth!

Ok folks.

Car has arrived and like a kid at Christmas I ripped the packaging open to see what I had got. Considering it only cost me £40 Im pretty pleased (although I probably wont be in a few weeks when it turns out that its totally shagged!). I reckon Im looking at a lot of work here, a good few weeks worth (would probably take you folks just a few hours but Im a moron so it will take me weeks/months/years....I might measure it in ice ages, then it wont seem as long)

Ive had a look at it and so far I have identified the following work that needs doing:

Tires are bald and need replacing
Radio gear needs installing
Fuel tank needs emptying and cleaning
Engine needs cleaning
Air filter is soaked with fuel and needs replacing
Body shell needs repairing
Drive belt to front wheels needs replacing
One of the shell supports needs repairing

The person who sold it to me didnt drain the tank of its fuel so as a result the thing is covered in fuel which will all need cleaning off. Whats the best way to do this? Can I clean the air filter (i touched it and fuel pissed out of it) or will it just need replacing?

Regarding the drive belt Im thinking of just not replacing it, making it RWD only and having some drift fun (viable or bollocks?)

The shell Im not sure about, its quite a dog (cracked in a few places, wing falling off/cracked). Im thinking about leaving it quite rough and giving it a banger/beaten up look (odd but like the RX7 on the intro from NFS Pro Street).

Heres a pic of the car from the top, if theres anything glaringly obvious that Ive missed please point it out!

Thanks

Don't do RWD if you're wanting to drift it, it really doesn't work :joker: These things don't have the weight balance or the momentum to pull it off, you need to keep it 4WD for that.
The air filter- preferably replace it, but if all else fails clean it with some washing up liquid, rinse it well, let it dry, then apply a couple of drops of filter oil and squidge it about til its even, helps to keep the finer crap at bay.
To clean it, apart from giving it a good strip down and clean up, you could use something like brake cleaner (usually available in spray tins), but bear in mind it might also remove any useful lubricants that are supposed to be there :joker:
Nowt wrong with basher shells, especially if you've got learning to do

Thanks for the info, really useful stuff

(can you tell Im clueless yet!)

Regarding the brake cleaner would something like WD40 do or is it a specific product that I need to pick up?

Ritchie - August 29, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
No don't use WD40 or anything like that, its a lubricant so it'll knacker your clutch and brakes.
Brake cleaner is a solvent cleaner used on car brakes/ clutches etc as a degreaser. You can get it from places like halfrauds etc. I swear by the stuff, its effective, dries off very quickly and I like the smell :gay: (solvent abuse is bad kids! :whip: :joker: ).
Also I think you can get some stuff called Muc-off, its a bike cleaner but also works well I believe.

just a tip on brake cleaner if you get it in your eye it hurts (like hell) but the quickest way for it to stop is to open your eye it then evaporates.

and yes this is expereance talking :joker: :joker:

Also known as skin diagnostic fluid- if you've got any cuts or scratches, that stuff will make them very obvious! :joker:

Basically rip it apart...

Put All the parts Except the Engine in a Bowl of Hot Water and Something.... Muc-Off, or other Good Safe Degreaser is Good. Failing that, you could use Washing Up liquid, but it's Not as Good and Won't cut throught the Oil, Nitro Shit...
Leave in for a Good Half Hour to an Hour...
Then get a Paintbrush, 1" and 2" so you can clean it all properly.

Air Filter... Bin It and Buy a New One. There like £3 Max !!!!!

Front Drive Belt... Replace it. Like Ritchie said.. You will Not be able to Drift a RWD car !!!!! It just doesn't happen !!!!

Engine... Spray Muc-Off on and let it Sit.... Get a 1" Paintbrush and spray some Muc-Off on that, then procede to give the Engine a Good Clean. You will Have to Re-Apply Muc-Off throughout the cleaning process to get it Nice...
While doing this, make sure NO WATER etc gets I the Engine !!!! You can prevent this by getting some Kitchen Towel or Rag and putting in the Carb Inlet and Exhaust Outlet.

Hope that Helps a bit more.

Any More Help.... Just Shout.

Thanks for the info/help folks. Im off to buy some Muc Off/other decent cleaner type stuff today and some paintbrushes too.

Timbo: Those links are gonna come in handy as it looks like the previous owner decided to keep the receiver unit from it.

Will I have to use another Hotbodies receiver or will any one work?
