Yep, needs a tweak Rob! ;)

Jedi Master - May 25, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)

Cheers for that Rob!!

At full throttle it is insane!!!

And it needs water with a mirror finish to achieve that. And even then, it sometimes takes off. This boat is only designed to hit around 50mph, so 65mph+ is right on the edge!! ;)

Bring on Milton Keynes then!!!

Glorykid - May 25, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
Thats nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well done sir on your scary creation, i may have to get a boat too!!!!

what about tommorow if the weather gets better!!!!!!

monty - May 25, 2008 01:16 PM (GMT)
haha looks awesome mate !!

seany5060 - May 25, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)

russmini - May 25, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)

OMG, following the trip out to Cannop ponds, Rob and Al will recall that the hull took on a bit of water. I was surprised because normally its a dry as a desert, even after flipping the boat at high speed. I did one flip at Cannop and the self-righting chamber flooded and turn it right side up.

So it was a bit of a mystery. I figured it was coming in through the bellows around the steering rod.

So, today I get it in the bath to take a look.

OMFG, water pissed into the hull from the join with the flood chamber. As the battery is fixed to the hull along this line, I reckon the flip must have pulled on the join and seperated the glass-fibre. :censored:

The hull itself is fine, so I've been busy with a hair-dryer and tons of epoxy glue this afternoon. I'll test in the bath and keep adding epoxy til its sorted.

Its to be expected when you push a hull past its design spec!!!

minivtec - May 26, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
oh bugger luke good job you got it out when you did or you might of had to go for a swim ( and it was very cold ) i am sure it will be alright

Although I'm miffed that its happened, I'm also glad in a way. I now know that there was a weakness there. And I've had the chance to fix it. If the join had come completely away then the boat would have flooded totally and I'd have fried over a grands worth of electronics. :o

When you push past a design spec you're always asking questions, coz no-one had any answers as to 'what will happen if I do this?'. To my knowledge, no-one has pushed tis hull past 60mph. :P

I'm also glad that I did manage to find the leak. The biggest issue with water ingress in the FE (fast electric) arena is not knowing where its coming from.

I'll keep on with the bath-tub trials until its air-tight again!!

russmini - May 26, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
Just out of Curiousity...

When your adding Epoxy etc as a means of sealing it back up...

I know it doesn't Weigh a lot, but would it not have an effect on the weight dynamics of the hull ???

I'm probably being a little too OTT here as a TC Racer where Everything takes Ages cause you want Total Weight Harmony on all 4 Corners, but just wondered.........

Jedi Master - May 26, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
Yes, you do have to take it into account. But I currently have the battery slightly off centre to ensure the flood chamber works, so I have options to move the weight about if my repairs have an effect. I also have a receiver battery that I can put where ever I want.

Generally, its the centre of gravity from front to back that has the most effect. Too far forward and you lose speed riding the bow, too far back and you get lift and bouncing. At top speeds it just takes off an flips!!!

seany5060 - May 26, 2008 06:08 PM (GMT)
yeah good thing you realised it was leaking, as said you could have been going for a swim,

also how did the electrics cost over a grand?, you must have some seriously expensive motor in there ....... well i suppose it would have to be to achieve the speeds it does.

Motor is a Lehner 2240 series. Hand made to order in Germany. Speed Controller is a Castle Creations Hydra 240. Battery is a Kokam Lipo 22.2v 4000mah 30C. Spektrum DX3R receiver and a 2400mah receiver pack. The water cooling system is on top of that along with 6mm gold connectors and noodle wire.

On 22.2v the motor revs to 47,000rpm, and I have a sharpened and polished 48mm steel prop to drive it. I use imported 'Marine Grade' shaft grease to reduce friction, its the same stuff they use on full size off-shore power boats!!

Took me 12 months to research the set-up, 6 months to be able to afford it and 2 days to put it together!!!

Take's 1 second to flip, sink and lose the bloody lot!!!!

(only joking, I fill the hull with bubble wrap so even it it did fill up with water it would still float to allow me to recover it  )

seany5060 - May 27, 2008 09:12 AM (GMT)
godd idea on the bubblewrap, certainly would not want to lose all that!

As a qualified Scuba diver, I have a back-up plan if ever it did sink!!!! :P ;)

what, your saying that your smart car can fit all your rc stuff, and scuba gear in it at once!! (jokes) but no, seriously would you just go for a swim while its sinking in the hope of getting to it before it sinks or leave it sink and then get diving?

I'm a member on another forum thats run in the U.S. for RC boaters. Basically, its the home forum for all of the guys who hold the world records.

I'm sad to say that there have been a number of posts recently telling us of tragic events where people have gone swimming for their boats, and not come back. I'm a strong swimmer; I can swim 3 miles in a pool and I've swum 1.5 miles in the open ocean, I can also free-dive to 15mtrs....

....but I will never swim for a boat. It just ain't worth it.

The temperature and chemical state of differing waters can affect your boyancy and energy in vastly different ways. I normally take a 'rescue' boat with me and I have a tennis ball on a huge length of line.

If it does sink, then I'd be gutted. But, it's always replaceable!!!!

minivtec - May 27, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
to right and your not

Public liability is no problem, but as for the boat itself.....

....way too high risk!!! :jump:

Matt - May 28, 2008 10:13 AM (GMT)
fair enough, dinghy it is then mate

Jedi Master - May 29, 2008 08:52 PM (GMT)
Update....

After 3 tubes of epoxy and some nifty work with a paint brush attached to a wire coat hanger, I have tested the Triton in the bath!!! :P

No LEAKS!!!!!

So, next time out, hopefully I'll get a GPS reading!!!
