Title: TVR Drifter- Chassis update

Ritchie - May 20, 2008 01:47 PM (GMT)
Here's my poor old TA05, it's laid neglected and unloved since the end of last season. Broken servo, knackered tyres, and covered in filth! Also, those with eagle-eyes might spot that all the steel bits on the rear are rusty... I ran some smoke bombs on it last year- looked the mutts nuts but corroded everything that wasn't inert :joker:

First job was to replace the rusty rear dogbones for some 3Racing UJ jobbies

Then added some 3Racing Ti king-pin screws/ joints and gave it all a thorough clean up:

Next job is to change the belts and fit the new spur gear

:joker: Dude its not that bad! Its only done one drift event since its last full rebuild! After that it sat in its box in perfect working order until the servo mount broke when I was pillaging the electrics for the Mini I got for christmas...
And the rust is not a neglect thing, its some kind of chemical reaction caused by the smoke bombs I used... I replaced any rusty screws, shafts and cups every time I ran it, so its been well looked after when it was in use.

seany5060 - May 21, 2008 04:26 PM (GMT)
kk, ritchie, what were the smoke bombs for though, just for show, oh and did they let out smoke slowly or what, i'm just curious as i've never heard of smoke bombs on an rc car before

Ritchie - May 22, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
Yeah I think I'm the only one to have done it!!
This is the car 1:1 drift car I look after, as you can see it makes a lot of smoke:

Anyway I was driving in a rc drift demo at a full size drift event and I wanted to replicate the smoke for a bit more realism. I had to heatproof the shell, make a big air duct to get it billowing out the back properly, and it really didn't smell good, but it certainly worked! Pulled a good crowd B)

It used to be my sig when I was in the SX Owners Club. I took that standing on the infield at Brands Hatch with Japanese driver Taniguchi peddling it. That bloke makes drifting look so easy. He dropped one of the rear wheels into the gravel at Paddock Hill, and kept it going

Ritchie - May 28, 2008 12:17 PM (GMT)
My new servo arrived yesterday (cheers Matt  ) so its all built up and running again! :woohoo:

All I need to do to the chassis now is get myself some new connectors for the motor, would anyone know if I'd be better off using Deans type plugs over the bullet connectors?
Please excuse the carpet dragons, it is a dedicated drifter but its just much easier to trim the steering without it skidding around on the laminate floor :joker:
New rims and tyres might have to wait til next month, but ordering my bodyshell today (PAYDAY  ), and Marc you might get an order soon too

Matt - May 28, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
tidy mate, glad the servo arrived safely.

as for connectors the tamiya bullets are rather naff they have a low current rating (don't know figures off hand but they dont like the higher power motors) deans would be the best option or solder wires direct

p.s. and same goes for the battery/speedo connectors, fit deans on those too

Ritchie - May 28, 2008 01:22 PM (GMT)
Cheers Matt, ordered a pair for the motor to begin with. I want to rebuild my stick packs at some point (need to change the layout for when I get round to getting a carbon chassis) so I'll swap out the battery connectors then.

Ritchie - May 30, 2008 01:47 PM (GMT)
After cleaning yogurt/ rhubarb off my laptop, spent the rest of my lunchtime changing my motor connector:

 Much tidier now.

And guess what I'll be doing over the weekend... (when I'm not playing COD that is... Larwoo let me know if you're playing over the weekend  )

What paintjob you doing on the Sagaris then Ritchie?

Matt

Ritchie - May 30, 2008 02:18 PM (GMT)
Not entirely sure yet Matt, going to have a good think over the weekend, come up with a few options. I've been told its time I took a break from green though
Might go for a Shaguar style Union Jack theme, make it the "Shagaris" :joker: :gay:

Matt - May 30, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
can't wait to see it finished, drift comp at next bash then?

What about trying to recreate one of the liveries from the T400R GT racer?

Class nice one mate, its all looking great :cool2:

I must say i love the tvr shell  cant wait to see that finished mate. B)

That would be cool, but this is gonna be my shell for the drift series so I need to do something a bit more original. I really like this shell though, and its very reasonably priced so I may just do another one at some point :D

Marc, regarding the motor, I'm not an expert on these things, but I believe its something to do with a fairly high rpm range for good control on the throttle. Might also have something to do with the fact that you don't really need that much torque on a drifter as you don't have any grip to put load on the motor...

Marc.. RC Addict! - June 2, 2008 12:12 PM (GMT)
cheers for the info mate, yeh im sure your right

looking forward to seeing your progress mate

Ritchie - June 4, 2008 01:42 PM (GMT)
Made a little bit of progess with the shell, its all cut out/ drilled to fit the '05. Now I need to order some new wheels with some mega offset- 9mm rear/ 6mm front  :bling:
HPI supply the shell with front light buckets, but I want rear ones too... So I'm making my own. I basically used the shell as a mold to make these (they're very much work-in-progress at the minute!), they're not too pretty yet but the fit is near perfect:

user posted image

The one on the right is the initial molding, the one on the left has been set upon by my dremel and is starting to take shape quite nicely :D Once they're shaped and drilled for the lights, they'll be painted up and ready to go

Marc.. RC Addict! - June 4, 2008 04:59 PM (GMT)
cool good idea mate, cant wait to see more

Jedi Master - June 4, 2008 06:07 PM (GMT)
Nice job, be good to see them fitted!!

Ritchie - June 17, 2008 04:51 PM (GMT)
Today, some serious offset arrived in the post

user posted image

I'll have a picture of these on the car up later

minivtec - June 17, 2008 05:17 PM (GMT)
those rims are cool where did you get them from

Ritchie - June 17, 2008 08:44 PM (GMT)
They're made by HPI, replicas of the Work XSA rim, and I got them from GenkiDoriDori (Japanese-based online rc drift shop).

6mm offset front, 9mm offset rear

user posted image

Happy bunny, they fit perfectly. Now I can crack on with the shell

Matt_N - June 17, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Wicked rims, that is some massive offset!! Any ideas on the paintjob yet?

Matt

Jedi Master - June 17, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
They look awesome!!!!

Marc.. RC Addict! - June 18, 2008 06:09 AM (GMT)
love the wheels mate  and the shell looks class, it will look pukka once its all done

Ritchie - July 22, 2008 04:32 PM (GMT)
Progress on my TVR has been painfully slow lately, what with work trips, holidays, and doing shells for other people... But this week I've got my ass in gear and I'm cracking on with it. Light buckets are done, painted and looking good. Paint scheme is still on hold while my mate decides what stickers he wants to put on it (he's going to sponsor my drifting  ). So in the meantime, I'm working on the exhaust. The Sagaris shell comes with exhausts molded into it, but I thought they looked a bit cack, so I cut it all out so I can fit my own. Here's prototype silencer can #1:
user posted image

I turned it (badly) on the lathe from a piece of nylon, drilled, painted it, and finished it off with real carbon fibre :bling:
Now I just need to make another identical one for the other side, and make the rest of the exhaust system to finish it off and allow me to mount them to the shell :(

minivtec - July 22, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
love the silencer nice job

Jedi Master - July 22, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
Very inspiring work!!!

Ritchie - July 23, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys!
Turns out the one I did yesterday was waaaay too big for the shell
So I brought the shell in with me today, and here's prototype #2, in all its bare nylon glory...

user posted image

Fits much better, now just need to tidy it up, paint it and trim it in carbon, then make another one!
Does anyone want prototype #1 for a truck shell or something? :lol2: :joker:

Would look great on my T-Maxx  :P

Matt

Ritchie - July 23, 2008 04:08 PM (GMT)
If you don't mind figuring out how you want to attach it, PM me your address and I'll send it over
I could drill it out to about 10mm if that'd be big enough to actually use it as part of the exhuast :joker: The Nylon is apparently good for over 100C so it could theoretically work...

Ritchie - July 29, 2008 09:07 PM (GMT)
Bit of progress, got the exhuasts nearly done!!

Test fit:

Hopefully not long til its done!! :banana_jump: :banana_jump:
