I'm on 2meg BT broadband and mine always works fine. But I am running twin 2.8ghz processors and I'm sure that must help. My PC also acts as a servo to my girlfriends AppleMac and that still doesn't affect it. Even when I'm playing online games with over 60 players in a game!!!
Marc.. RC Addict! - February 16, 2008 02:42 PM (GMT)

m8 u can even got core quad extreme wich is 4x 3.0GHz and that will be no diffrence in internet speed, if the processor is single core 2.0 it is engouh to use whole boardband speed :) i also recommend FireFox internet browswer albout 20% faster than IE and much safer, also much stable
Jedi Master - February 16, 2008 02:54 PM (GMT)
Cool. Didn't know that!!!!

Do a google hunt for broadband speed testing, there's a few websites out there so you can test your broadband. If you're consistently getting less speed than stated on your contract (IE what you're paying for) then you have a legitimate complaint.
Do a few speed runs at fixed times during the day. For example, early morning (should be quick, low congestion), midmorning (should be quick as well, most people should be at work), afternoon will be slower as kids are at home and doing homework (IE surfing smut), and of course evenings will be the slowest, as everyone is online then.
Do the runs for a week or so and log the results, building a case against your ISP.
Might be your contention ratio as well. Most residential providers have a 50:1 ratio, meaning that you and up to 49 neighbours can be surfing at the same time. Don't need to be a brain surgeon to figure out that with 50 people surfing at the same time, you'll be quicker off with a dialup modem. It's their way of saving money, as they assume that no more than 10 people will be using that flimsy little bit of copper between your area and the exchange at any one time. (you know, the little cable that the gardener just ripped to shreds with his weedwacker)
Also, how far are you from the exchange?
Check the small print in your contract. The lower the contention ratio, the higher your monthly contract charge will be.
HTH.
(as we're shamelessly plugging, give me a shout if you need networking/servers/ecxchange/routers/firewalls/cisco/etc advice or help, post in here instead of PM'ing. Share the love! No I won't charge consultancy.)
ps: although you lot are talking about virgin, IE cable, the principles remain the same for cable or DSL.

Hehe yeah it's a 4Mb leased line, so that's same up and down.
Pricetag doesn't compare to consumer broadband either, unless you want to pay 13K pa for the privilege.. (but you do get dedicated 24/7 support that's not based in Bangalore)

seany5060 - February 23, 2008 05:19 PM (GMT)

gd or not?
Jedi Master - February 23, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
Your upload and ping speed look fine, your download speed could be better, but do you need it to be. Its whether or not you think your PC is slow. ;)
Mine runs multiple applications with two security programs running and at the same time it acts as a server for my other half's AppleMac, and I'm playing on-line games at the same time. It never crashes or runs slow, so I assume my figures are good. :joker:
I only need my PC to be good enough to cope with the work I do on it, it may be really slow compared to 'top-line' PC's (I wouldn't know) but it does what I need it to do so I'm not worried about the figures!!

hi marc,
im with virgin to Which is a complete and utter f***n wast of time we are supposed to be gettin 8 meg i tested it and its 0.04 which is 40 kbps slow as hell thats slower than the origional 56k modem. if you want to find out your speed type into google
broadband speed tester and scroll down it should only be a few links down to the ZDNET one its usually good just click start test and it will show yours against a bar graff and you can see all the speeds. hope thats been of some help
