Description: discussion on how best to get started.
sheps2007 - January 13, 2008 08:32 AM (GMT)
Hi, my boy wants to get into racing. any suggestion on a car, how to learn and find out more etc.
Any help/advice gladly listened to. :D
rcmadd - January 13, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)
my best advice before you get a car go to your local club and chat to the organiser and club members
then you need to work out what you are willing to spend on his car, batts, handset, motor, reciever, speedo, ect it does all mount up and before you know it you have spent a couple of hundred.
i would go second hand at first incase he does not like it.
although i cannot see that happening as i love it and im 42 lol :D

Thanks for that :D we have been to the local club (indoor) and had a mixed response about the best brand/type of car to get for a beginner. Any suggestions?

what surface is it? carpet or?
STR33TRAC3R - January 13, 2008 01:36 PM (GMT)
Probably carpet.
If there's any 12th scale racing there it's a good place to start.
Bit's are cheaper and set ups are more basic.
If not then getting a second hand 10th car is a good way to go IMO.
There are a lot of people like me look after their cars. Genurally mantain and repair them regardless of cost. Then sell them in next to perfect conditon for a newer model.

The surface of the club is just a hard floor. local sports centre, no carpet. I have looked at the 1:12th cars but didn't know if he would grow out of that to quickly, if you know what i mean. and then he would have to upgrade!!

12th isnt as easy as you think as the cars are very equally matched
id suggest talking to matt as he has experience with hard floor
someting like a
schumacher mi2 would be ideal there cheap and relitivly easy to work on plus alot of people have them so advice is easy to come by
i had one when i first started and i learnt alot about set ups etc with it and then moved on to a better more expenisve car

yeah schumacher mi2 go for about 65quid, can't go wrong with a schumacher, decent spares backup as well. could also go for a losi.
i race on wood floor, u'll need some schumacher yellow mini pin tyres

Thanks rcmadd. :D
don't think my lad is up to club standard yet! any advice on getting him there?
purpletimbo - January 14, 2008 05:30 PM (GMT)
practice :D
But you honestly won't get much worth learning on under £80 all in, so may as well start with something reasonable, as learning on a toy won't do him much good really.
rcmadd - January 14, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
you dont say how old he is
club racing is the starting point of all top national drivers
you could start him off with silver can motor, very cheap to buy, if you buy my chassis i could supply one for you. B)

as rcmadd as said club racing is where to start, find out the location of your local club and pop in and have a look at what its all about, a club member or official will explain how it all works and give you some advice on what equipment you will require
ojay93 - January 15, 2008 08:02 PM (GMT)
you could look at an HPI e10 touing car and put some racing slicks on that would be fine and that is absolutly everything batts charger radio gear servo esc and motor and a chassis for under 100 quid and that way if he gets bored and doesnt want to continue it wont be a big blow. like 3 or 4 hundred would be. just a suggestion its 1/10th scale though :cruising:
