Title: looking to buy a new car.

ryanuk - November 12, 2007 11:19 AM (GMT)
hello,

first off nice forum had a fast look around and it looks great and helpfull.

im looking into buying a nitro rc car for around £300-350 not sure if it would
be best to get a RTR or build my own,now i have never done one before
so are they hard to build?

also what make would be best to get are HPI good as i have seen the rs4
on a few sites and like the look of it.

also im not 100% sure if i want a onroad of bug as i like the look of the on road
but the bugs do look fun!

any help you be great

thanks ryan.

First off fun or competition makes a world of difference
next on or off road? well all depends where you can run it, fast on roads need a lot of very flat space, so unless you have a nice car park in mind an off road might get more use.
A lot of the fun is building it yourself, not too hard as long as you take your time and follow the instructions carefully, and you can always ask on here we'll help.
Whereabouts are you based as well?
So all in all depends on what you want out of the car. then we can certainly give some advice a little better
And welcome by the way
Tim

ryanuk - November 12, 2007 11:57 AM (GMT)
thanks for fast reply mate.

im in cannock staffordshire,to be fair its going to be for fun,but if i get into it
then i may want to race not 100% sure yet.

just been watching a few vids on youtube and the onroad do look lots of fun,
what sort of build your own car would you go for then?

also want it to be fast ;)

purpletimbo - November 12, 2007 12:01 PM (GMT)
Tamiya are best quality for building kits from, but serious racing probably not, best to ask Russ or Matt for the latest TC racers that are competitive.
There are a few of us round there, we had a great bash at Cannock as you can see, One of us is Wolverhampton way, couple Birmingham I think and Milton Keynes and Northampton, so your end is popular, I'm stuck on my own up North, barring Scoobster and Astra fergy.
Cheers Tim

ryanuk - November 12, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)
great sounds like im in a good area then :)

yeah i will see what matt has to say then mate, also are nitro lots faster then
battery ones?

thanks v much for the help :D

Matt - November 12, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
welcome aboard :)

generally excluding tamiya all the cheaper cars are rtr and the top cars are kits with no radio gear etc,

if you really want to build it and dont want to spend too much cash as tim suggested maybe get a tamiya to start out with.

if you can live with not building it and want a bit more performance then there is much larger range to choose from :)

and to answer your last question... yes nitro is faster but top line electric cars running brushless system/lipo's can go extremely fast.

STR33TRAC3R - November 12, 2007 05:10 PM (GMT)
If you've got £350 you can get pretty much any 10th nitro.

You could get a Mugen MTX4 (The one that won the world championships) £240

NINJA .12 including exhaust and manifold, (The one that won the world championships) £199

Then you could get a bargin Acoms RX TX servo set for about £25ish.

Building the cars is easy, it's finding the perfect set up which is hard.

HPI's are crap compared to decent racing chassis's.

A world championship winning buggy will cost you more.

swiftpro17 - November 12, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
welcome aboard mate

ryanuk - November 12, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
thanks for all the help lads, sorry its a late reply only just got back from work,
shifts grrrr......

you i want to build my own,so can anyone give me some links to cars
that are build your own for no more then £400 yep gone up £50 :)

thanks again!

STR33TRAC3R - November 13, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
Depends where you want to go cheap, Chassis, engine or electrics?

I would say electrics for starters. I mean who can really benifit from a servo turning 0.3 quicker. Logic says run a cheapo servo and press the buttons on the transmitter sooner.

Then i would say engine, you can pay a lot of money for very little performance gain.

Look on ebay.

ryanuk - November 13, 2007 08:39 AM (GMT)
now im going to sound still now,but dont you get the engine with the build your own kits?

also what make engine are best to go for?

Matt - November 13, 2007 09:26 AM (GMT)
won't get an engine no so u'll need to buy one, if your going for a nitro touring

try get a novarossi or ninja engine

ryanuk - November 13, 2007 09:33 AM (GMT)
cool thanks matt, also is there a good model shop in the midlands were i could get it from and they could give me some help on what to get.

also when iv built it hope you dont mind me coming to some meets :)

Matt - November 13, 2007 10:11 AM (GMT)
well theres www.birminghammodelcentre.co.uk

but i don't think they will stock the cars your interested in

trying to think... maybe russ would be better to ask.

i get all my r/c gear mail order now

and sure your welcome to come along to the meets mate

ryanuk - November 13, 2007 10:57 AM (GMT)
having a think about it,would i be better off looking at geting a second hand car
that has been bulit?

would ebay be a good bet?

STR33TRAC3R - November 13, 2007 05:35 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't bother buying from ebay.
It's like buying someones old pair of shoes.

Orion wasp engines are also awesome and compete with Nova and Ninja.

I also buy all my parts off the internet.

If you were to buy some parts from the ebay, buy as few as possible unless they are listed as new. That's just my opinion.

The HPI R40 is known as the worst kit car ever but you can get one for $255 us dollars, 2.2 dollars to the pound thats £115
http://www.theworldofhobbies.com/detail.aspx?ID=1117

If you want a kit car without the hassle get the Team magic RTR G4S, it's basially a kit car prebuilt.

Now this is the best car ever!!!!!
All yours and ready to run for £299 it's truely the best performing and best looking car i've ever seen.

Matt - November 13, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
haven't had a go with a team magic, but it does look very impressive

good suggestion there STR33TRAC3R

STR33TRAC3R - November 13, 2007 09:16 PM (GMT)
Team Magic is a company based in Taiwan so their production costs are low, but they're used to making things. So you get great quality at a low price.
Similar to the Go Tech engines that are all the rage.

Have to say i like Team Magic a lot, all their models have twin layed down servos. And they won the European 10th touring championships twice in a row.

Kyosho pay all the best drivers to race their models in the worlds so......

Wish i had got a Team Magic RTR as my first tourer instead of paying the same price for a Schumacher Fusion.
I got sucked in by the big mph numbers. :joker:

Shame really, the Schumacher has made me totally skint and still isn't finished. Fit That RTR Team Magic with a Wasp .12 and i bet the sound when it hits 70mph is sweet.

ryanuk - November 13, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
thanks for the help again lads, that Team Magic one looks mint!

can it be raced? also are parts easy to get hold of?

STR33TRAC3R - November 14, 2007 07:52 AM (GMT)
Yeah it can be raced. You just type the part code into google and choose from hundereds of shops that sell the parts.

Or just email CML, tell them which part you need and they will get it for you because CML are the main supplier of most r/c things in the country.

ryanuk - November 14, 2007 10:22 AM (GMT)
thanks for that mate, now only one more thing!

as its only a 12 engine does that meen its going to be slowish?
i know its not about top speed but what would the topspeed of it be around?

thanks again for all your help people!

GREAT FORUM

Matt - November 14, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
the .12/.15 engines might be small but a top line one will get the cars doing 65-70mph!

ryanuk - November 14, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
so would the standard engine in the Team Magic G4S RTR do that sort of speed?

dam thats fast!

Matt - November 14, 2007 12:53 PM (GMT)
the team magic is 2 speed but the engine is a SH12 i don't now much about this engine, in its favour the car somes with a decent tuned pipe so that will help a lot.

my guess is u'd get 60mph out of it

i'm tempted to get one of these as well :P

ryanuk - November 14, 2007 01:00 PM (GMT)
haha niceone matt,

it was going to be maybe christmas time but dont think i can wait!

iv also seen it for £269 off the net http://www.kevsracingbits.com/team-magic-g...ar-i603244.html

not a bad price, also read some reviews and its ment to be wkd,not a bad thing said!:)

Matt - November 14, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
seems a good deal for the money

STR33TRAC3R - November 14, 2007 11:00 PM (GMT)
That's a great deal for the money.

Just a warning, the Le Mans cars are different to the G4S, and don't have the same type of quality. IMO

ryanuk - November 15, 2007 10:07 AM (GMT)
thanks for that street! the link i showed you is not the la mans one is it? for £269 as i dont want to get the wrong one.:)

STR33TRAC3R - November 15, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
No your right, but on that site they also sell the Team Magic RTR Le Mans cars, they come with a free starter box and are around the same price.

Just thought i would point out that their shells do look cool. (I like the GPT shell, it's like the Le mans Bently). But underneath the Le mans cars are not as good.

ryanuk - November 15, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
thanks for that mate, just emailed kevsracingbits but they have none in stock.
but have some coming in.

i wanted one for the weekend as my girlfriend said she will lend me the cash to
get one :)

Matt - November 15, 2007 01:34 PM (GMT)
cool bet u can't wait to get it

ryanuk - November 15, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
yeah matt cant wait! i think its going to be best geting the rtr one for my first car
as the kit would cost me loads more with engine ect. so i can just see how it goes
with this one.

im sure i will have loads of fun,am i rite in thinking that there is a racing track in stafford? is so thats great as its only 15 mins away from cannock. :)

ryanuk - November 17, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
