You had a look and found out pretty much the origins, it was adopted by Hitler because of it's Meaning, which you can't really blame him for.

The original symbol was called the Flyfot,and it faced the other direction.I'm not 100% certain,but I think the symbol was of middle-eastern origin,possibly Indian.
