Title: Mi3's First Race... Outdoors

russmini - May 23, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
Well i finished the Mi3 at work today.
I flew over to Bedworth tonight to see how it ran and enter it in it's First Race.

Round 1

Completly as manual.
Very Twitchy, Comes with a Spool, which i'm not used to, so that didn't help either.

Round 2

Changed a few things to help the rear stick a bit better.
I t was better, managed to set a New PB.

Round 3

Another couple of changes to lose a bit of the twitchyness at the front. I like my cars a little lazy on turn in.
Much better.
Another PB, and this time my first 17 Lapper.

Final

I did change a couple more things to see, not really much difference this time.
Pretty much a parade of where we all qualified.

Result 4th.

Thoughts

Not too bad, first time out and i beat the Yoke in 3 out of the 4 Races. also finally got the 17 Lapper that i knew was always there somewhere.
Overall, i wouldn't say it was that much Quicker than the Yoke on a single lap. I think where it Wins is it's much more consistant.
And i was running the Tyres that the Yoke had run on on Sunday, which were losing their best then, so... New Tyres amd a few more tweaks here and there and my summary would be, we're onto a WINNER !!!!

Might take it Indoors on Friday, not too sure yet.

Can't wait though to use it again, and dial it in more.

Well, it's going into it's 2nd Race tomorrow night.

It'll be Indoors on a tight track, so we'll see how it goes.

I've checked it all over and changed the setup to basically Chris Ashton's in the Manual.

Stone Cold Spider 3:16 - May 25, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
what changes did u make inbewteen the rounds there russ???

russmini - May 26, 2007 08:08 AM (GMT)
Which ones Stoney ?? Indoors or outdoors ?

Outdoors, i started with Kit/Manual setup.

Was Very loose on the rear, so i basically just had to dial in rear end grip. Which just meant with the time i had changing springs, shock position (lay down one hole), lengthening the top link for more camber change, bit more rear toe-in and in the final i took the anti roll bar off.
These all made differences which helped.
But i know you said you'd set yours up as per Chris's Outdoor setup. And watching his car go mate, it must be pretty much spot on.
I will change mine next outdoor Race to Chris's setup to see how that feels from the off.
The one thing i always do, purely to suit my driving style is to put some toe-in on the front, cause i like the car a little lazy going into the corners.

All that was with a Spool fitted, which i have No experiance with, but i know all the top guys use them outdoors, so i wanna stay with it and gain some experiance/knowledge of a Spool.

Indoors... I'll put my thoughts in the new Mi3 2nd Race Thread.

Every single post is about not being used to a spool, spool doesn't work, not good without a diff, this spool, that spool, etc etc etc...

Only a poor tradesman blames his tools!

(joking bud... I'm just jealous...)

Trust me mate...

A Spool is a Different World in Handling terms, especially when you've never used one, it's just so wierd on the steering.
But i can see the advantages, so i will be staying with it for Outdoor Racing.

ive raced all 3 front diffs over the years

the spool is very good... its very consistant compared to a one-way... its also very easy to drive.... pushes on corner entry but hauls arse on corner exit... u can set the car up to reduce the amount of corner entry push

One-Way is also good... but not having breaks with a one-way has all but killed it for huge grunt of the brushless mod motors as more and more drivers are having to use breaks... the one way is very good to use with Stock or 19turn and also is very tght tracks where u need alot of turn inot the corners.....

ball diff - good all round front diff.... jack of all trads - master of none....

yeah try 1dagree toe-out
with the spool this will help with trun into the corner... it will reduce the coner entry push

Got all 3 with the Yoke.

I could never get on with the One Way.. Too much steering into the corner. Which is what it's for but just too much for me personally.

I do like the On Power the Spool gives. Ideal for Outside, Too much for Tight Indoors though.

Will get a Diff for the Mi3, then i can start experimenting.
