Title: Vintage 1/10 electric buggies for sale
Description: Schumacher, Yokomo, and Associated

poprock - May 7, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
I wasn’t sure whether to put this in the for sale forum or here in the vintage one. I tossed a coin.

I used to race every Sunday in Hull in the early nineties, but stopped at the age of 18 when I went away to university and was thus without a car to drive myself to race meetings in. All my cars and equipment went in to my Dad’s loft and was forgotten about. He moved house a few times over the years, but kept it all in storage … until now. He’s buggered off to France, and given me back all of my R/C stuff.

The sad part is, I’ve no desire to start racing again and nowhere to keep all this stuff. So it’s got to go. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how/where to sell it—or even if anyone wanted it.

This lot hasn’t been used in around twelve years, but it has been stored carefully. I figure the batteries will be no use to man or beast any more, and don’t know whether the motors will be worth trying to run after sitting for that length of time … but all the cars and spares are just fine. The cars in fact look to be in fantastic condition!

Here’s what I’ve got:

Yokomo YZ10 Super Dogfighter
I even have the original box and instruction manual with this.

Associated RC10
This one has story to it. Was converted to 4WD by MIP over in the States. Apparently there were very few of these ever brought to the UK (four, maybe five?). The kit has been removed to leave the car in almost standard 2WD form, but the parts are all still here—including specially toughened front driveshafts which were meant for the MIP owner’s own car (he gave them to me at the ’93 worlds).

3x Schumacher Cougar 2
I have a bunch of these. My Cougar 2 Works which was my main racer, a standard Cougar 2 which I raced in an off-road saloon stock class, and a ‘spares’ chassis. Also enough spare parts to probably build a fourth. My main Works racer lacks the fancy Works driveshafts, as I often raced it in truck form and those things couldn’t handle the stress of big wheels.

These cars were all in race-ready condition when packed away for storage. The Cougar 2 Works is running Kyosho Gold shocks, the YZ10 has Associated shocks all round … the cars had lots of tweaks here and there.

I have two big boxes full of tyres to suit both off-road and indoor (carpet/wood) racing—4WD, 2WD and truck sizes. All used, but not badly worn.

Spares and tools for all the cars—full MIP 4WD conversion for the RC10, spare chassis for that and the Cougars, and so on. Lots of suspension parts, spring sets for adjusting ride, full sets of pinions and drive gears for changing ratio, all that sort of thing.

Three transmitters (two stick, one trigger), full set of frequency crystals.

Six or seven motors, modified and stock. Not sure how much good these will be after twelve years in storage.

Piles of batteries, again not sure that these will be any use. Panasonic and Fabiix sticks, saddle packs of Fabiix and Sanyos.

Swanky peak charger and a more standard unbranded one.

Very nice Nosram speedo and an okay Tekin one.

Two or three steering servos.

Bunch of bodyshells, some better painted than others (I was good with the old airbrush, but I was young and had dubious taste. Some have not stood the test of time well).

There’s probably more … I think I can see a whole Cougar 2 gearbox in one of the bags of spares … but I’ll stop there and post a few blurry cameraphone photos.

Anyone got any thoughts on what I should do with this lot?

poprock - May 7, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
That’s my YZ10 at the top, a couple of the Cougars to the left and my RC10 on the right, without it’s shocks but still sporting some BRCA numbers!

Spare parts, wheels and tyres galore … and my old truck bodyshell at the bottom-right which made it as far as the lofty heights of being photographed in Radio Race Car magazine. Or maybe it was RCMC … I forget.

poprock - May 7, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
Bit more of a close-up on the Cougars … the rainbow-striped one was my main racer. I had so much fun with that thing. This is probably the best shot I have left of the YZ10, which had a paint job I was really proud of.

poprock - May 7, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
Here’s the RC10. You can see the front gearbox and belt for the 4WD conversion sitting on the floor next to it. I dyed all of it’s nylon parts dark blue to match the paintwork … shame the paintwork was pig-ugly!

poprock - May 7, 2007 02:58 PM (GMT)
There’s a fair few tyres in there! Also a pretty nice peak charger that I can’t for the life of me remember how to work.

Matt - May 7, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)

poprock - May 7, 2007 06:53 PM (GMT)
I’d love to drive these cars again, but I really don’t have the spare time to get back into the game prooperly and can’t justify the expense of batteries etc just to give them an occasional blast around the park.

I think what I’ll do is try to get some better photos taken so you guys know what they’re actually like—some with the bodyshells off would be a good start, I know! I’ve just got these things packed away in my garage, so it’ll probably be later in the week before I take ’em out again to get shots of.

I’ll not promise the cars to anyone until you’ve all had the chance to see some decent photos. Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Thanks everyone for replying so quickly (or is that just the result of a wet and windy Bank Holiday Monday? ;) )

Russ, you’re dead right: Tekomo Pro Slope. It was on the tip of my tongue, honest.

I did see the vids of the ’93 worlds, that must have been why I already had a bookmark for this website … I spotted those a while ago and enjoyed reliving it!

I’m going to try coming clean here and admiting that I don’t have a clue what my gear is worth in this day and age. I realise that it’s relying on the kindness of strangers a bit, but so long as these cars go to a loving home I won’t be too bothered. Anyone feel like giving me a clue as to what the cars should be selling for?

I know the 4WD RC10 is rare, but I also know that it’s rare for a reason: They weren’t very good! Well, they were difficult to keep running reliably on muddy UK racetracks. Any car that can make the top ten against a field of YZ10s at the worlds can’t be all bad. I used to race it 4WD indoors over the winter season and just forget about it on the grass in the summer. The looks on people’s faces were hilarious if they didn’t know the car. I’ll need to investigate further and see just what sort of condition all the 4WD conversion parts are in. I suspect spares would be utterly impossible to source nowadays.

Lozi - May 7, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
hopefully some1 will be able to help you out with what there worth, i wish i could but i dont have a clue!

when you have an idea of what the cougars are worth could you let me know please, having a cougar again will be like a trip back in time for me i used to love mine!

poprock - May 7, 2007 07:07 PM (GMT)
I swear, of all the cars I ever owned, the Cougar 2s were the most pure, simple fun. Even more so on messy outdoor tracks with truck wheels and beefed up suspension!

tomstacey - May 7, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
Hey mate.. Yes I think the Wet Bank holiday has kept us all glued to our PCs!!

As for value.. it's hard as it depends purely on condition with RC cars that have been run. New unbuilt cars can be worth quite a sum, mainly due to their rarity. NIB YZ10's are maybe worth £200-275 on a good day, Cougars maybe £130 - 150? The MIP RC10 is almost impossible to value!

Cars that have been run can be worth anything from 99p (ask purpletimbo, he's bought enough unloved stuff on ebay!!) to maybe half of their new unbuilt value.

For reference, I bought a built never run YZ10 like yours for £120 - that was a top spec machine though with all the upgrades. A Cougar 2 that was run once I paid £45 for around xmas last year.

All depends on condition I Spose, thanks for offering to take some better photos.

I'm sure one way or another we can relieve you of your old stuff though :)

purpletimbo - May 7, 2007 11:48 PM (GMT)
Count me out, they are all worth far more than my price bracket :joker: :joker: :joker:
Seriously though welcome aboard and good luck, if I raced I'd be fighting for the YZ-10 at the correct price. I'm sure I have one shelf spare in a shed somewhere :D

Lozi - May 9, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
any news on prices ive got cougar on the brain lol!

poprock - May 12, 2007 01:03 PM (GMT)
I’ve been out taking pictures this afternoon.

Here’s some of the YZ10:

This must have been the last car I used, all the electrics are still in it. Including my Nosram Dominator speedo, which I really liked, and a teeny-tiny Gem lightweight receiver. The motor’s an AGR Works Spec modified, but damned if I can remember what exctly it was. There’s at least another five motors in one of my bags full of spares anyway.

poprock - May 12, 2007 01:08 PM (GMT)
Some shots of my Cougar 2 Works. I never actually bought a full C2 Works, or a full Cougar kit for that matter. I had a Topcat many many years ago and just slowly upgraded it as newer models came on the scene. I ended up with three or four full cars all at varying Cougar 2 or Storm specs. Must’ve spent a fortune at the time!

The motor’s a Demon modified of some flavour or other. Standard spec driveshafts rather than Works spec, because the works spec ones used to shear off when you tired to run it with big truck wheels. The steering’s ballraced, and so on. I have a huge bag full of of Cougar parts, but haven’t dug through to see what they all are.

poprock - May 12, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
This is the other Cougar 2 I have built up and running.

Standard Schumacher shocks, unlike the Kyosho Golds on the other one. Standard drive train instead of the Works one, non-ballraced steering, etc. I ran this as a saloon in the stock class at my local club, hence the dirt cover rather than a proper bodyshell. I think it was disguised as a Porsche 911, A BMW M3, and a Corvette Stingray at various times in it’s racing life. That’ll be a stock motor of some sort in the back end. This one was set up to run on stick batteries, rather than saddle packs.

Finally, my RC10. This has no shocks or tyres fitted at the moment. I know there’s at least one set of shocks in my bags and boxes of parts, not sure what kind. I think the Associated ones from this car ended up on my YZ10.

This RC10 was converted to 4WD and back again. I still have all the 4WD parts, but they probably need a bit of TLC. The belt is most likely twisted from being stored away, for instance.

You can see a slot in the front suspension mount, this is where the front differential bolts in, the driveshafts from that run through special steering blocks that aren’t on the car at the moment. On the gearbox, you can see a hole in the casing—that middle gear gets replaced with one that has an extra-long pin, that sticks through the hole and runs the belt, over the little tensioner ballrace that’s visible and through the hole cut in the rear suspension mount.

I think that’s a Cougar 1 wing mount on the back … most likely I fitted that because I was using it to seat body mounts on for running the 4WD RC10 in a saloon class at some point.

tomstacey - May 12, 2007 01:53 PM (GMT)
I should imagine that under the protective tape on the RC10, the chassis is as new?

If so, that chassis would be worth a fortune (£50 maybe more) on somewhere like RC10Talk.com. The rest of the car isn't worth too much I'm afraid as most of the bits are still available new from AE.

The Cougar Works tranny is v.rare.. shame you haven't got a purple chassis to go with it in good condition.. The pair might be worth £60 to a schumacher collector.

The YZ10 I like :) Would be the perfect vintage runner to go with my shelf queen.. :D

Lozi - May 12, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
i think £60 is out of my price range, postage would cost a fortune on top of that?

shame i was lookin forward to cougar'n it again :( :crying: :banghead:

That’s a (quite thick) Teflon protector on the underside of the RC10 chassis. I assume the blue chassis is spotless underneath it, but I’m not sure how cleanly the Teflon would come off. I do have a spare chassis as well though … black anodised and very shiny.

Lozi, I’m thinking the best thing to do may be send a big box with everything I have southwards … if some of you guys live near(ish) to each other, you could divvy it up between yourselves rather than me splitting it up and mailing it to different places. What would anyone think of that plan? It could save a fortune in delivery costs.

Lozi - May 12, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
i would be up for that, im after everything i can get cougar! not sure i live near any1 else who is interested tho

tomstacey - May 12, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
Ooh.. I need a new RC10 chassis as well. :)

By All means send it all to Lozi and we can deal with it from there.

I live in Essex by the way...

or you could send the Cougar stuff to Lozi and the Associated Yokomo to me? Is that too much hassle for you mate?

Lozi - May 12, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
second idea seems to make sense slightly more if it wasnt hassle or to much £, im in northampton

Lozi - May 18, 2007 11:57 PM (GMT)
Any News?

poprock - May 19, 2007 08:52 AM (GMT)
Sorry, I was just giving it a few days to see if anyone else was still interested, or if it was down to you and Tom splitting it halfway.

If you want to take the Cougars and Tom wants to take to Associated and Yokomo, that's cool with me. Just need to figure out how to get ’em down to you. I’ll drop you each a PM about price and we can go from there. As for delivery, the cars aren’t too much bother, but the huge pile of additional kit might be more troublesome, so we’ll need to see if there’s any of it you don’t actually want. No point paying out to send stuff if it’s just going in the bin.

tomstacey - May 19, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
Cheers matey. Let me have a think about exactly what I want and I'll give you a shout back shortly :)

Lozi - May 19, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)

poprock - May 31, 2007 11:24 AM (GMT)
So then …

Lozi has my Cougars, Tom should have my YZ10 by now. I still have the mega-strange MIP 4WD RC10 to sell.

Let me know how you guys get on with the cars!

Matt - May 31, 2007 11:29 AM (GMT)
i'm half tempted for the rc10 4wd, but i need a car for racing, prob not the best car for racing as spares etc?

tomstacey - May 31, 2007 12:40 PM (GMT)
Funny you should say that matt, but spares availability for RC10 team cars is excellent. Just take a look at tower hobbies or stormer hobbies online.

The bits that break/wear are all available. Shells you can get new from AE too.

Bearings are standard, as are shocks.

I'd say go for it :)

poprock - May 31, 2007 12:52 PM (GMT)
It would be fine for racing as a 2WD, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to race it regularly in 4WD form. As you say, no spares. The front driveshafts tended to bend under rough use.

Matt - May 31, 2007 01:17 PM (GMT)
yeah i'd be after running it 4wd.

i'm not really into 2wd cars in fact i've never had one lol

Lozi - May 31, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
im very happy with cougars thank you, i put the tekin speedo and the acoms reciever in the works 1 and 1 of my stickpacks and it worked straight away no hassle, pretty quick to! cant belive after all those years the motor is still rapid!

i have converted the other cougar to a truck with the shell and wheels, i just need a reciever to test that out!

cheers mate nice 1
