Title: Linking to external sites and search function?

obsidian - December 15, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
I've noticed that when opening the main page, it takes forever to load. As far as I can see it's caused by the links and images hosted on other websites. Is there a reason for doing it like this (copyright)?

Wouldn't it be easier just to host the images on the same webserver as the forum, and just create links on those images?

Also, the search function doesn't seem to work. After clicking submit, the forums are selected (turn blue) but thereafter nothing happens. The search button is greyed out, so not much use there...

Is it something I'm doing wrong or is there something awry with the search function?

Never worked for me the search that is. Unless I restricted the options greatly, always leaves me the 10 searches as well never counts down

I wonder if the management can help shed some light on this?

Hey Obs,

I think the reason for the GFX being hosted on imageshack is cos this board is on a shared server and we don't have hosting space for anything but the board software and the DB that stores all the posts. Imageshack can sometimes be fast, but most of the time it crawls like an aminal that has just evoled from something that swam in the sea.

One way round this (and yes, I know its not in the spirit of things, but some people have to pay for bandwidth :sharp_exit: ) is to block the images using adblock or similar in Firefox.

But then you wouldn't know about all the wonderful deals you can get as part of RC-R :D

Hi,

images are hosted on imageshack for reasons Tom mentioned, i have to say though its usually pretty fast server and i dont have any probs the site loads immediately.

the recent problem i did have is google adverts coming onto the site making it dead slow,

the reason for this is that invisionfree (our message board hosts) have google adverts on every message board to make some revenue as they are free message boards.

but there is an option in admin to pay $5.00 and buy ad removal credits this makes the site work as normal for me.

normally i pay this every few weeks or as the credits disapear (they go down with each few site hits we get) but as i have had zero cash lately that is why google ads are back and the site is dead slow.

sorry guys!

Matt

The site being slow is something I can live with, tbh. I don't mind waiting a few seconds more for it to load.

What does get me though is the search function, or lack thereof. Can anyone shed light on this?

A search function is IMO crucial to a message board, I'm sure we've all used it on other forii to avoid having the regulars bite back with: do a search, noob! :P

hmm yeah good point the search feature doesn't work anymore :(

i'll have to look into that, i know invision are supposed to be upgrading the boards sometime soon so should be fixed then.

another option is rcr moving to full version of invision, but that involves hosting costs etc and with the amount of members we have i can't justify paying out each month at the minute.

pro's and con's to a free site i guess.

maybe sometime later when/if rcr doubles the amount of members then can maybe think about full version of invision

There is a chance I may be able to host it for us :)

I'll look into it with the Admin team privately if thats ok with all.

Best use of the word "Nepotism" in 2006 Tim.. Well done!

Anyhoo, publicly, it goes like this - I work for a place where I can host sites for nothing.. tons of bandwidth and auto-backup etc. Except, I'm officially being made redundant next friday. Unofficially I have an interview for my own job on Tuesday and if I don't fook it up, I'll keep my job and the perks. :)

We'll know next week anyway. :D

Tom

In my opinion, a job interview is more important than bandwidth for a forum.

Go polish that CV, and we'll keep fingers toes and other appendages crossed for ya.
